Before & After: Roxy's Home Office Transformation
An accent wall isn't the worst idea ever.
I fell in love with this new Brunschwig and Fils wallpaper, Jardin Fleuri, and ran with it. The feminine chinoiserie design, the soft color palette, if I were a wallpaper, this would be it. I've always turned my nose up at an accent wall; they seem half done, but, my desire to include this wallpaper and the high price conveniently eradicated any previous notions of accent wall distaste. Start with something you love and you can't go wrong, right? You can read about all the wallpapers I chose for our house here. There have been a few added since, stay tuned!
Never leave a window naked!
Shades and drapery were the next install. You should never underestimate the power of window treatments. They can make a room! The custom shades are the Designer Reserve Woven Wood Shades in Antigua from Select Blinds, don't let the name fool you, and we love them. Their customer service is incredible and they run sales on a regular basis!
I decided to go for it and on top of the shades we did a custom cornice and fixed drapes since they didn't have to be functional. I had so much fun designing it all with Jenny, owner of Grace By Design, who also happened to do all the incredible treatments for Society Social Charlotte. The fabric is an affordable ecru colored lightweight linen and the trim is a Samuel and Sons Greek Key Tape that I chose to match the trim in Sherwin Williams Warming Peach.Replicating lines, textures, and colors create cohesiveness in design. We mounted the treatment just below the trim which makes the high ceilings feel even airer.
Don't skimp on the ceiling.
After we touched almost every surface in the room, the white ceiling stood out like a sore thumb. It drew your eye up and then it just stopped. I've always been a fan of the "more is more" aesthetic, thank goodness maximalism is back in, but know it can be overwhelming to pull off in a smaller space. With that said, a favorite tip for making a smaller space feel more grandiose (while still adding a bit of flair) is to paint or wallpaper your ceiling. This space is frequently overlooked but when given a little attention, it can truly add a show-stopping element that brings your eye upward and welcomes you in! Enter Sherwin Williams Aristocrat Peach to match the walls.
We moved into our new home a little less than a year ago and we're finally making small decorating strides. First up, my home office. Home offices are more important than ever and if you're thinking about making updates or upgrades (go on, you deserve it ;), I hope you find inspiration in these ideas!
Paint goes a long way.
To make the accent walls, seem less like accent-y, I matched the ground of the wallpaper to Sherwin Williams Aristocrat Peach. You guys helped me decide on the 'gram. Thank you! And a shout out to my husband who painted the entire office while I was gone on a girls weekend. Yes, babe.
Paint the trim! Paint it all!
White trim was too obvious and just seemed like it would look unfinished by the time the wallpaper was installed. After staring at the paint test spots for no less than a few hundred hours, we decided to paint the trim Sherwin Williams Warming Peach. Painting trim a touch darker than the walls added the absolutely right amount of contrast and flair.
Then came the wallpaper!
Can you imagine white trim here? Me either. We ended up wallpapering 2 walls because I guess not all past notions of accent wall distaste had been successfully eradicated. 2 walls painted, 2 walls wallpapered turned out to be a lovely balance. This bamboo credenza is a vintage piece I scooped up while we lived in NYC.
Here is a video of the install and the little reveal we did with Austen Kelly who is learning young that good design is in the details ;) Having a 1 year old in a 700 square foot NYC 1 bedroom to having a home office as pretty as this feels like a dream. Scroll for a few more ideas that helped me round out the space!
Tonal vibes keep it calm.
After 2020, a sense of calm and ease is what we all need in our lives. Keeping spaces tonal and soft can create that. The Society Social Chippendale desk is custom painted in Sherwin William Aristocrat peach yet again and the Samuel and Sons Greek Key Tape is a touch darker to match the trim in Sherwin Williams Warming Peach.
Recycle and Reuse!
You may recognize the Stevie Swivel from Gramercy Court. It was custom upholstered in a beautiful woven by Brunschwig and Fils, Monterey Texture in Sea. The chair itself is one of my all time personal Society Social faves and its soft and contrasting color was perfect for the space. You may notice a similar color scheme here. It is apparently my favorite and so is this darling girl who is still swiveling around in these chairs ;)
