While studying abroad in Orvieto, Italy Morgan obtained the nickname Melvin G. which comes from her first initial and part of her maiden name. The name stuck and became her signature on all of her work. All of her work focuses on control. It began while observing the stark contrast of her young daughter’s oblivion to her lack of control with her late father’s awareness of his declining penmanship due to Parkinson’s Disease. She began to emulate the intentionality of his tiny marks with the freeness of her large chaotic scribbles into my abstract work. There was a beautiful and natural balance in the two forming a unique paper background, which she then cut and formed into collages allowing me to apply a fresh form of control into each piece.
