KN: My favorite cocktail to mark a celebratory occasion is the French martini. My friend makes them by the thermos-full for tailgating, picnics and the like, but they are especially festive for a girls' night or a swank cocktail party.
SS: Tell us about a recent, most memorable social!
KN: I served French martinis at an engagement party I hosted a few months ago for my sister and her new husband. This was the party's "signature" drink, which I renamed the "Nye's-n-easy" after my sister's maiden name, Nye. The party was the best kind of social to host at home -- lots of family and friends, great drinks, passed hors d'oeuvres and fun, silly old pictures of the happy couple. Instead of tables draped in fine linens, I rented high-topped cafe tables and bamboo bar stools so my home felt more like a night club. My brother-in-law is a very laid back Midwesterner and requested the menu reflect that, so I served lamb "popsicles," mac and cheese "shooters" and steak-house style shrimp cocktail. What a memorable night!
SS: What’s next on your Society Social wish list?
KN: I would choose the Darlington chair. It would be such a nice counterpoint to the old-world, French country feel of my dining room. I love the starkness of the black Darlington-- a bunch of them surrounding an old, weathered farm table would look so chic! The chair and bar cart feel very "Mad Men" to me. If only I had a magic wand to make Don Draper appear in my home, relaxing and drinking an old-fashioned, in that chair of course!
